Kathmandu, February 12, 2026 – As Nepal approaches its crucial House of Representatives elections on March 5, security forces are on high alert. The Nepal Army has significantly scaled up operations across all provinces to ensure peaceful voting and prevent any disruptions.
This comes after the Election Commission (EC) issued notices to 51 entities for alleged violations of the 2026 Election Code of Conduct. The violations reportedly include improper campaigning and misuse of resources. The EC has demanded written clarifications, signaling strict enforcement during this post-political upheaval period.
Following the September 2025 Gen-Z protests that led to government change and the formation of an interim administration under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, the elections are seen as a key step toward stability. The interim government has pledged transparent polls and investigations into past violence.
Armed Police Force (APF) Inspector General Raju Aryal recently instructed personnel to mobilize immediately without prior approval if needed, drawing parallels to disaster response protocols. In Gandaki Province reviews, he emphasized proactive action for election security.
The Nepal Army's intensified role includes patrolling sensitive areas, protecting polling stations, and coordinating with other agencies. Officials stress that free and fair elections are vital for democracy amid ongoing demands for anti-corruption reforms.
Experts note that with millions of voters, including landless communities in remote districts, turnout could shape Nepal's political future. India has provided logistical support, with PM Karki expressing gratitude.
